But what are orthopedic shoes? These are specially designed shoes that match the structure of your feet. Anatomically, our foot is composed of bones, muscles, and ligaments. The first metatarsal bone – the bone found in our big toe, and the mid section of our foot carries most of the body weight and plays a major role in propulsion. The calcaneus bone forms our heel and works along with the tarsal bone to enable the movement of the ankle joints. These are the major parts of our foot that works hard for us to perform our daily activities. It is very important to make sure that these foot parts are well protected and kept to be in their anatomical position as much as possible to avoid foot and leg pains. It may sound complicated, but thanks to the inventors of the orthopedic shoes, your foot can now get the right treatment they deserve. When purchasing orthopedic shoes, you need to consider the size of your foot (length and width), any malformation like polydatyly – extra toes, and how often do these shoes be used. In other words, there are no orthopedic shoes that fit all kinds of foot. In fact, the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) highly recommends purchasing custom made orthopedic shoes to make sure that the shoes fits perfectly thus benefiting the most from it.

The next time when you think of buying a pair of shoes, why not consider what would make your feet happy as well. Orthopedic shoes are available in different sizes and designs to match your outfit. Better yet, have it custom made so you would get the benefit of comfort and style. Yes, it may cost few more bucks but having a happy feet is priceless.

Buying Orthopedic Shoes

June 20th, 2010

What are the things to consider when you are looking for a pair of shoes? Other than the fashion factors, there are lots of other important things that you should consider.

First and the far most important one is the size of your shoes. When choosing a new pair of shoes, make sure you have enough of room in the toe area, so that your toes do not get pinched or squeezed. Make sure your toes have a room to breathe.

Another important factor is the material that the shoes are made of. They are better to be made with elastic material, so that it can be adjustable when your feet need it. In general, it is better to have roomy shoes, although too much of anything is not encouraged.

If you have some extra room in your budget or if your employer has a benefit plan that covers it, you should consider getting orthopedic shoes. These are custom made shoes that can bring such a relief to any foot pain or discomfort you may have. Orthopedic shoes are the ultimate gift that you can give to your own feet.

How to use Orthotics?

June 15th, 2010

This article shows the proper way on how to use orthotics, what they are and  how they work.  Let us define first what orthotics is. The word orthotic comes from the Greek ‘ortho’ – to correct. The correct term for orthotic is foot orthosis (plural: orthoses) which means a device designed to correct the foot. Orthotic insoles are a device placed inside the patient’s shoes with the purpose of correcting faulty foot function. Faulty foot functions includes, Heel Pain, Heel Spurs, Pain under the ball of the foot, Bunion, dis-alignment and many more.

Custom-made foot orthotics can:

  • correct an abnormal walking pattern
  • reduce pain
  • provide support
  • prevent or protect against worsening foot deformity
  • provide better positioning (foot alignment)
  • relieve pressure on a certain area of the foot
  • improve the overall mechanics of the foot and lower extremity
Guide on how to use your Orthotics

1.    Start out wearing your orthotics for only one hour the first day. Increase each day by increments of one hour, so the third day wear your orthotics for three hours.

2.    If you experience any achenes, cramping or bruising sensations, stop wearing your orthotics for the day. There is no rush. Your orthotics are working to undo damage which took years in the making. Your foot  is your best doctor and when it starts to hurt, listen. Some people can only wear the orthotics for 15 minutes the first day.

3.    Be sure to use the correct size of shoe and style with your orthotic. Your doctor will advise you on proper shoe gear. It is generally best to wear shoes with deep heel seats for best control and to reduce heel slippage. Remove all arch supports or inserts from shoes before inserting new orthotics.

4.    Your health care provider will want to follow up with an orthotic check in four weeks, which is when most patients begin wearing their orthotics comfortably.

If you have persistent foot pain, ask your doctor if foot orthotics would help you.

Orthotics and it’s importance

June 12th, 2010
Orthotics is the medical field concerned with the application and manufacture of orthoses, devices which support or correct the function of a limb or the torso.
Individuals who benefit from an orthosis have sustained a physical impairment such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, or a congenital abnormality such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy.
Orthotics are orthopedic devices that are used to alter or modify foot function and are designed to treat, adjust, and support various bio-mechanical foot disorders. Some orthotics are simple, commercially-made devices, such as cushioned heel cups or insoles for shoes that are sold over the counter in drug stores or other retail establishments.
The most effective orthotics, however, are custom-made devices that are crafted to meet the specific needs of a particular individual. Custom orthotics are created using an impression of the foot called a cast, which duplicates any misalignments in foot structure.
Using the cast and computer technology, technicians in an orthotic laboratory design a device that balances out deformities and corrects misalignments.
To have an orthotic made properly, a podiatrist should perform a biomechanical examination to learn what forces are coming into your foot from the lower back, hips, knee, and ankle.
A gait analysis is often performed to see how the foot functions when walking. Ultimately a mold of the foot is taken with plaster or fiberglass while holding the foot in a stable, neutral position. It is from this mold that the orthotic is fabricated.
The finished orthotic is placed in the patient’s shoe to support the foot and eliminate abnormal foot biomechanics by keeping the foot properly aligned. Depending on the patient’s needs, the orthotic may have padding to cushion the foot and make it more comfortable.
